The writers of Goodnight Sweetheart were given the unenviable task of glorifying an adulterer (and later bigamist) and still making him sympathetic to the audience. Although I feel they did phenomenally well with this aspect of the show, I still can't imagine there being an overly large female fanbase as a result. So, I pose this question to the handful of women who post here - did this ever make you feel uncomfortable in any way? And how were you able to overlook it and still enjoy the show?

I think that having Nick in the lead role smoothed over what could have been a negative female perception of the series. You can't get around the premise that the series is constructed around, but having a nice guy in that role helped make people forget about that issue and enjoy it for what it was. My two cents anyway.

In reality, I would not tolerate two-timing what-so-ever but this is far from reality, a sci fi comedy that can't happen. That of course doesn't make it right but I agree with Terry, it's a comedy of 'what if' played out brilliantly by the excellent cast. The whole situation wasn't made easy for Gary who was put under a lot of stress at times (he's own fault of course) like when Phoebe met Yvonne, Nick's expression had me and my daughter in tears. Again, in reality, Gary's life would've been harder and more stressful if you took away the comedy element. Also, technically speaking, when Gary was with Phoebe he wasn't two-timing her because Yvonne hadn't been born yet and when he was with Yvonne in the nineties, Phoebe would be very old with an old Gary who had got trapped in the past that is if they were still alive. No one knows how they would react if they suddenly found out they had the gift of time travel but if Gary had not have found the portal, I don't think he would've two-timed Yvonne. But I'm glad the writers made the right decision and ended the show the way they did. Of course making it a comedy starring Nicholas Lyndhurst (who we're fans of) and the way it was made made it funny and easy to watch but had it been a serious scifi drama, I don't think many people would've liked it giving it the nickname 'The time travelling scumbag'

I'll put this right in my version of what happens next. I think it will be a solution that all will welcome.

I agree with the point raised upthread that the casting of the lead role perhaps effected public perception of the character's actions. The tone of the show quite probably helped as well. Though it wasn't offensive as such, i still also feel GS was of its time, if that makes sense.
