Not something I’d necessarily say out loud but this is something I’ve wanted to do for so long. I was working not too far from the Bethnal Green underground and couldn’t resist nipping on the tube a few stops to find Columbia road. I was awash with emotion seeing these cobbled streets and the Royal Oak which is such a pivotal part to this wonderful show. I love it. When I arrived having memorised the route on Google maps someone was unloading items from a truck right outside so had to wait a few moments for them to leave. What a wonderful experience to see this beautiful spot for real. At last I can smile at all my pictures and say I have been there. I’ll be watching through the series again and this time joyful at the thought I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

Having just binge-watched most of the entire output on dailymotion, I'm delighted to see so much of the location intact. Technical point: in Edinburgh I learnt to call those rectangular blocks of granite which make the road surface "setts", not "cobbles. Cobbles are round.
