There’s something about this episode that just makes it seem so quick for me. For some reason, when I get to the end, I’m always left thinking, ‘Surely that’s only half way through’. Never been able to put my finger on just what it is that causes that.
Some great dialogue between Gary and Yvonne at the start, showing how well they can get on, and this carries on over into the dancing scene. I often find myself wondering what it is that they see in each other, however, these scenes highlight the very definite spark that exists between them.
I particularly like the scene at the printers, which contains the first real (if brief) discussion on how and why the time portal works, and gives some insight into why Ron doesn’t make any more attempts to pass through the portal, even if just for an experiment. I always enjoy Ron’s reaction to Gary telling him that he’s told Phoebe he’s married to Marilyn Monroe.
I also like the hospital scene where Reg reads out his list, then eats it, although that does simply build upon the premise that Reg’s character exists only for purposes of comic relief. Phoebe is shown in this scene standing up to her Dad even more, and this is nicely building up towards the situations she finds herself in during later episodes.
The confrontation between Yvonne and Ron when he comes looking for Gary shows just how much she dislikes him, and she’s quite aggressive towards him, leaving Ron in a mostly defensive role, which always makes me feel sorry for him, as he is often seen trying to make a certain amount of effort with Yvonne, however, she frequently brushes him aside as if he doesn’t matter and I think this is only something that helps to make Yvonne a more dislikeable character.
The payoff for watching this episode for me is the build up of Ron’s story about what happened in Lithuania, leading to the heated exchange between Gary and Yvonne, resulting in Gary’s hilarious reaction to the accusation of indecent exposure. The ‘Phoebe Sparrow’ twist in the final scene then caps off the episode nicely with that final moment of realisation.
I’d give this episode an 65% rating.
