This time through, I decided to approach "Goodnight Sweetheart" from a different angle. Instead of proceeding directly from Series Three to Series Four, which had always created such an abrupt disconnect for me, I watched the final Dervla/Michelle episode, "Let's Get Away from It All," and then took a break. Well over a week later, I rejoined GS with Liz/Emma in the roles of Phoebe/Yvonne. It made all the difference in the world. No longer did I find myself constantly comparing the "rival" actresses. For the first time, I saw the opening Series Four episode, "You're Driving Me Crazy," with fresh eyes and a new appreciation for the later cast. The one-week hiatus did not make me forget the earlier three series, of course, but it did enable me to make a conscious effort to be objective about what was yet to come. I am now convinced that Elizabeth Carling and Emma Amos are every bit as enjoyable as their predecessors. Even my least favourite episode, "How I Won the War," was much better than I had remembered it.
