I often get my mind in a tangle when I think of this.
So Gary goes back to see phoebe and all the while she could be old and having never met Gary yet he (hasn't yet where I'm up to) looked for her in the present day. I do wonder if he's afraid to in case he finds out something he doesn't want to.
You could imagine she goes through life in the present day unhappy but Gary going back injects some excitement and happiness into her life.
It gets even more confusing because he mentions how changing things can cause the present day to go upside down and wrong (like Ron's grandad episode) yet the whole act of him going back and doing what he does with phoebes life that surely mixes up what's she's gone through up until the present day! Not only that him being around at that time and then surpassing his birth date would mess things up surely?!

Are you new to the series then jr866gooner? I think the complications of time travel that you mention are what makes the series great. There is a lot of poetic licence that can be used.

Not really , I had a big break. I watched it when I was between 10 and 14 originally when it aired. I agree it makes it great but yes the fear of changing too much. He marries Phoebe and she takes Gary’s name, but when he’s in the nineties you’d imagine she married another or maybe not at all. He’s so worried of changing too much in the fourties it’s odd he goes that far as to change Phoebes life forever!

Also all the forged notes he printed in the 90’s especially for the 40’s!

Bit of a late post... Actually, there are many instances of Gary changing the future and the one that stands out the most is when he tracks down Reg's girlfriend, Margie, and introduces Reg to his own son. Ripper of an episode I think.

Yes, as has been mentioned the irony is the very fact he goes back and has such an impact on phoebe's life is a change in itself. In the 90s she had never met him!
